Edwardian Pig Bar Brooch c.1910
A fabulous novelty Pig brooch by Alabaster & Wilson.
This quirky brooch has a realistic 3 dimensional gold pig attached to a platinum and gold bar.
The brooch is a good heavy weight and has a safety catch to the reverse typical of this quality maker of the time. Alabaster & Wilson were well known for making novelty jewellery in the late Victorian & Edwardian eras.
The pig could be converted to a charm or pendant if required.
As symbols of good luck, pigs go back at least to the Middle Ages. Owning pigs meant a person was prosperous and would never go hungry. The popularity of lucky Victorian pigs blossomed in the 19th Century.
As symbols of good luck in a New Year, pigs were pictured on cards and became popular in ornaments and jewellery.
