Edwardian Running Fox Reverse Intaglio Crystal Brooch c.1910
A beautiful Edwardian rock crystal brooch realistically depicting a running fox.
This beautiful brooch has a finely painted running fox detailed into the carved oval ock crystal. The fox is seen running through a landscape detailed with grass and ferns. The rock crystal is backed with mother of pearl and finely set within a gold border, it is closed to the reverse in gold and has a sprung pin with a handmade safety catch.
This technique is made by the rock crystal being cut into a cabochon shape and a detailed design carved into it from the reverse. The image is painted inside the crystal so that when viewed from the front it appears in three dimensions. This technique is known as a “reverse intaglio.” The technique is sometimes referred to as an 'Essex crystal.'
