Victorian Ruby & Diamond Fly Locket c.1890
A quirky late Victorian gemset 'fly' locket.
This stylish oval locket is embellished with a ruby and diamond set fly to the front.
The little fly is realistically figured with gold legs and head, a silver and gold ruby abdomen and silver diamond set wings. The locket has its orginal matt gilded finish and a glazed compartment to the reverse.
The locket is in beautiful condition and has a gold runner ring to attach a chain or ribbon.
Images of flies on ancient gems were used as a talisman against evil. It is also a symbol of courage. In the Victorian era the fly was used to symbolise mortality and humility.

Measurements: Locket 2.2 cm in length (excluding bail), 1.7cm at widest point.
